Contact Lens Information

In today's society, the wearing of contact lenses is common place. Many patients inquire about wearing contact lenses during their eye examinations. Patient education regarding all aspects of contact lenses is key to successful fitting and wear.

A contact lens is made out of a plastic material and is placed directly on the cornea of the eye to correct a person's refractive error. Contacts must be fitted by an eye care professional due to the different curvatures and prescription strengths. Proper measurements are taken to assure optimum vision while maintaining good eye health. Eye infections and inflammations are often caused by improper fittings.

There are many different types of contact lenses.
The two main categories are: Soft and RGP (Rigid Gas Permeable).
From there, contact lenses branch out into many other categories.

Contact Lens Fitting Information and Fees

Please be aware that an eyeglass prescription
is not a contact lens prescription.

  • If you have been previously fit for contacts at
The Family Eye Care Center or elsewhere the fee is :
$39 for a yearly contact lens evaluation.
  • The prerequisite for a contact lens fitting is an eye exam no more than 6 months prior to fitting.
  • For new contact lens wearers, the fitting cannot be done on the same day as the eye exam due to the time required for the fitting.
  • Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian, during the fitting process.
  • The Family Eye Care Center does not recommend contact lens fittings for children under 12 years of age.
